< PreviousASPIRE - YOUR NORTH CENTRAL MICHIGAN COLLEGE MAGAZINE A season of gratitude Alana VanderMeer had ignored her sore right shoulder for weeks. The 5’8” outside hitter, who notched 76 kills during the 2022-23 season, chalked it up to overuse and continued to practice. But when she hit a ball during warmups of the Timberwolves’ home opener in August, she knew something was wrong. A visit with the athletic trainer confirmed her fear: scapular dyskinesis. “Basically, my shoulder blades don’t move like they should,” she explained. “My right shoulder lacks about 45 degrees of rotation from overuse.” VanderMeer’s treatment plan was six weeks off the court plus twice-weekly physical therapy. “I was devastated, because six weeks fell right at the end of the season,” she said. “Volleyball has been a huge part of my life, almost year- round, since I was in seventh grade. Now it was being yanked out from under me.” VanderMeer is a second- year player with no plans to continue her volleyball career after this season. Her injury forced an abrupt end to an eight-year chapter of her life. Coach Shannon Flippin knew that VanderMeer, a team captain valued for being introspective and level- headed, could still be a leader, even from the sidelines. “I approached Alana with the idea of keeping her involved by scouting video of opponents and laying the groundwork for our game planning,” Flippin said. Scouting involves studying an opposing team to learn its strengths and weaknesses for a competitive advantage. A volleyball scout report includes information about a team’s hitter and passer patterns, its rotations, and more. VanderMeer was “immediately on board” with the idea, Flippin said. She brought a computer to every practice to study film on her team’s opponents, producing detailed scouting reports for Flippin and assistant coaches Erin Luckhardt and Heather Miller. “It’s tedious, but I’ve really enjoyed it,” she said. “It allows us to be more strategic with our gameplay, and it allows me to feel like I’m still helping my team.” VanderMeer says her new, hands-off role has made her a better teammate in some ways. “I’ve picked up on things that I never would have seen if I hadn’t gotten injured,” she said. “From the bench, I have a different perspective of our team dynamic. I can see when a player is getting down, and I’ve learned what kinds of things can bring her back up.” It’s not the season she’d hoped for, but VanderMeer said intentional gratitude — for fun teammates, for being able to run, for new perspectives — has been key to maintaining a positive attitude. “When big, scary things are happening, it helps to find the little things you can be grateful for,” she said. p How do you deal with something so big when it happens so suddenly? Alana VanderMeer’s final volleyball season doesn’t look anything like she’d imagined, but she’s learning to find opportunity in adversity. “ — Alana VanderMeerWWW.NCMICH.EDU When 19-year-old Ella Dixon needs to sort out her feelings on a subject, she reaches for her sketchbook. Full of doodles, poems, and to-do lists, the dog-eared, spiral-bound book is never far from her grasp. “For me, art is expression. I can take my feelings and turn them into words or a physical thing,” she said. “Sometimes I don’t even know how I’m feeling about a topic. Turning off my brain and playing with glue and glitter helps.” Throughout life, Dixon has had to find creative ways to express herself while dealing with a hearing impairment and dyslexia that left her struggling to read in elementary school. Music became her outlet in third grade, and she spent two years learning violin with the Dorothy Gerber Strings Program. In seventh grade, she found comfort in the relaxed, creative environment of the art room. Art in all forms, from drawing and sculpting to photography and writing, became her passion. “Through art, I’m able to better comprehend myself, and others can better understand me, too, as it relates to dyslexia,” Dixon said. Thanks to speech therapy, her teachers’ steady expertise, and her mom’s unwavering advocacy, Dixon has more than overcome those early struggles, graduating from North Central’s rigorous Early College program with an Associate of Arts degree in 2023. “It’s really cool to see how I went from being all the way at the bottom academically to being here,” she said. Art was likely an important part of Dixon’s success, and there’s science to support it. A 2022 study looked at the academic performance of students across 42 elementary and middle schools in Houston. Data revealed that students who had increased arts education experiences improved in writing achievement, emotional and cognitive empathy, and classroom engagement. They also had increased higher education aspirations. Dixon continued to study art at North Central, taking classes in Photoshop and ceramics. Professor Anne Morningstar and Instructor Stephen Stuchell taught her a lot about art, she said, but even more about herself. “I preach art to people as much as I can,” Dixon said. “It’s a creative outlet to learn more about your surroundings and especially yourself. A lot of people, especially kids, might not be able to tell you what they’re feeling, but give them some crayons and paper and you’ll find out what their emotions are.” p Art for (more than) art’s sake M ultimedia artist Ella Dixon says art helps her better understand herself and her place in the world. Her to-scale ceramic model of a World War II-era German violin won the Sculptural Honorable Mention award at the 2023 Michigan Ceramic Art Association’s Michigan Mud conference, a biennial exhibition showcasing ceramic art from across Michigan. 11 EXPENSES Salaries & Benefits$12,207,858 Contracted Services$2,356,428 College Operations$2,616,842 Scholarships/Waivers $569,500 Transfer to Other Funds$233,522 Total$17,984,150 Salary and Benefits 67.9% College Operations 14.6% Scholarships/ Waivers 3.2% Contracted Services 13.1% Transfer to Other Funds 1.2% REVENUES Emmet County Property Taxes $6,925,000 Tuition & Fees$5,570,150 State Appropriations$4,500,000 Other$ 989,000 Total$ 17,984,150 Emmet County Property Taxes 38.5% State Appropriations 25% Other 5.5% Tuition and Fees 31% Financials are based on the 2022-2023 amended budget for the 2022-2023 fiscal year (7/1/2022 – 6/30/2023).
