Few other adjectives accurately capture how profoundly this event has changed our personal and professional lives over the past months. On balance, if I were to choose an adjective to describe our community’s response to this collective new reality, it is inspiring . As is so often the case, our character has been revealed by our response to adversity. I have never been more proud of — or more inspired by — our students, faculty, staff, and you, our community stakeholders. To our amazing students, I shared with you how dismayed I was that the final months of your North Central experience looked so different than the sendoff you deserved. While I never wavered from my position that the safety of our campus community is paramount, the decision to reconsider Commencement and Nurse Pinning was extremely difficult. Even so, when the pandemic resulted in an abrupt disruption to your living- learning experience, you showed adaptability beyond your years. When you should have been decorating your mortarboards and celebrating with your friends, you were adjusting to your temporary “new normal” with poise and resilience. And finally, when social distancing forced all classes online, your grit and determination to finish the semester strong inspired us to do the same. To our dedicated faculty and staff, I shared with you how proud I was of your heroic response to this generation-defining event. You stepped up . . . for our collective safety and for the educational well-being of our students. You supported our community by donating supplies and equipment to McLaren Northern Michigan, cooked meals for area residents in need, and 3D-printed protective mask prototypes for evaluation by local infectious disease physicians. You supported the Foundation’s “North Central Cares” campaign, which helped our students facing immediate financial hardships caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. And when this virus took one of our own, your shared grief at the loss of our friend, mentor and colleague, Professor Larry Cummings, showed the unity of our North Central family. Finally, to our community members: Thank you for your continued support of the College’s vision, and your confidence in us to deliver on our mission, which inspires us daily. Thank you for your support of our remarkable students, who also benefit from your generosity and your belief that education empowers us all to achieve more than we believe possible. You all remain at the top of my mind as we navigate these ever-changing circumstances. Thank you for the adaptability you have already shown during these unprecedented times. Together, we will walk through this difficult situation and emerge stronger and more resilient as a result, inspiring others along the way. Sincerely, David Roland Finley, Ph.D. President A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT An inspiring response to an unprecedented event Welcome to the inaugural edition of Aspire, a biannual magazine for friends of North Central Michigan College. It was February 2018, and North Central’s newest science faculty member sensed that around campus, there was excitement around sustainability and “green” initiatives. The Physical Plant Department had just been awarded a grant from the Michigan Agency for Energy to retrofit all parking lot lights to LED. Grant dollars cut the total cost of the project from nearly $13,000 to $8,800, with energy savings projected at $5,300 per year. In the Residence Hall, showerheads in 21 shared bathrooms were converted to low-flow models, each saving significantly on water. A student in Professor Kerri Finlayson’s Intro to Sustainability class applied for and was awarded a Coca-Cola “Keep America Beautiful” grant to offset the cost of multi-stream recycling bins. The bins were placed around campus, and the grant saved the college nearly $9,800. “Employees and students seemed to be coalescing around sustainability, but we were lacking coordination,” Lockridge said. “My goal for the committee was to bring people together to share ideas and figure out an organized plan to implement them.” Lockridge met with then-President Cameron Brunet-Koch, and North Central’s Sustainability Committee was born. An untapped excitement around all things “green” grew wings. “It began as an ad hoc, volunteer committee, but there was such excitement that we immediately had 25 people say, ‘I’d like to be a part of that,’” Lockridge said. Summer 2019 saw the addition of the most visible changes on campus to date. Members of the Leadership Little Traverse (LLT) Class of 2019 identified and adopted their class project, Solarize Petoskey. Their goal was to create a learning opportunity that spanned the fields of sustainability, science and engineering, and they wanted the project to yield measurable results. The plan? An 8 kW, 20-module, ground-mounted solar panel array that would produce approximately 11,000 kWh per year, to be fed back into the City of Petoskey’s electric grid. A mutual agreement with the college ensured that the solar panel array would find its home on campus, behind the Library. Thanks to generous donors, LLT raised $40,000 to fund the project. In addition, Dave Kring Chevrolet Cadillac donated an electric vehicle-charging station, installed adjacent to the solar panel array and free for visitors to campus to use. A ribbon-cutting celebration in September 2019 marked the completion of LLT’s yearlong project. July 2019 also saw the addition of a green roof, which was installed over the north side of the Student and Community Resource Center, viewable from the east-facing windows within the Iron Horse Café. Funding for the project — more than $28,000 — was secured through a grant from the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council, in-kind gifts from Traverse City-based Inhabitect LLC, and North Central Michigan College. “A layer of permeable materials and plants collects and treats rainfall and snowmelt that would otherwise result in stormwater runoff,” said Ernst Rusche, Physical Plant director. “The green roof also provides a layer of insulation that reduces heating and cooling needs and associated costs.” Going, going, green North Central’s path toward a sustainable futureFinally, a rain garden bioswale was installed adjacent to the college’s Jack and Dorothy Harris Health Education and Science Center. The bioswale, which was funded by a $15,000 grant from the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council, receives runoff from nearby impervious surfaces and temporarily retains it, removing pollutants from the runoff before they are absorbed into the ground. “The bioswale is not only beneficial for water runoff protection, it’s also a model for college programs and community teaching,” Lockridge noted. “These initiatives are just the first steps in what has become a campus-wide commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship,” Lockridge said. “We hope to be a regional leader in producing measurable progress at reducing North Central’s environmental impact, encouraging fiscal responsibility, and educating students and the community about best practices for a sustainable future.” For more information about sustainability at North Central, visit our website: www.ncmich.edu/sustainability p 385,500261 phone chargers coffeemakers dishwashers N orth Central as a whole uses 337,418 kW per year, so to meet the college’s electrical demand, we would need an additional 136 arrays of the same size. The solar panel array is an 8-kW, 20-module system that will produce approximately 11,000 kWh per year. Track the array’s electrical production with the dashboard on our website. Baby Luna is a stunningly realistic representation of a newborn from birth to 28 days after delivery. She is equipped with technology to help students practice and gain proficiency in newborn assessment, neonatal resuscitation, advanced life support and more. North Central is grateful to the Borra Family Foundation for its generous support of our nursing and allied health programs. Counselor joins North Central’s team The college welcomed Mary A. Mummaw, MA, LPC, to campus on April 20, when she joined the Student Services department as a full-time counselor. A North Central alumna, Mummaw received her bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University and her Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Western Michigan University. Mummaw attributes her successful career to a personal experience she had with a North Central counselor, someone who encouraged her and helped her build the future she wanted for her family. “When I was a struggling single mother, my North Central counselor provided the roadmap I so desperately needed,” Mummaw said. “More importantly, he made me believe that I was entirely capable of achieving it.” Mummaw hopes that she can provide the same experience to the next generation of North Central students. College wraps a full year of club athletics Co-ed running and ski racing teams enjoy competition, camaraderie Twenty North Central student-athletes participated in club sports during the 2019-20 school year, and the college is looking to add two more club sports, bowling and esports. Student-athlete Jacob Blanzy, a member of the running club, remembers the Kirtland Invitational: “I remember hearing other fans on the sidelines yelling, ‘Go, North Central!’ and even though they weren’t part of our school community, it still gave me a sense of pride that I could represent my school. The whole journey is one I won’t soon forget and will forever be special to me and my teammates.” MiCareerQuest 2020 scheduled for September 25 Hands-on career-exploration event returns to North Central for second year Save the date for MiCareerQuest 2020, as the hugely popular career-exploration event for Char-Em 9 th and 11 th graders is scheduled to return to the SCRC gymnasium on September 25. In October 2019, approximately 1,000 students from 11 Char-Em school districts visited North Central for the chance to “try on” dozens of exciting career paths in an amped-up career fair featuring hands-on, engaging experiences. Awarded to just 80 applicants per year, the scholarship’s current four-year value is approximately $58,000. Emma credits her North Central Early College experience with setting her up for success at CMU. “Being part of the Early College program has allowed me to get a step ahead in my education while saving both time and money,” Doederlein said. “The wonderful instructors I have had throughout the Early College program have allowed me to personalize my educational experience, and their guidance has helped me discover my passions. I love attending class knowing my professors know each of their students and truly care about their students’ success.” Emma was selected based on a number of factors, including her high school GPA and SAT/ACT score, her essay contest submission, and additional information provided on her competition application. CMU’s Honors Scholarship Program is a “comprehensive, fully-enriched academic experience for high academic ability students who seek to aim higher and achieve more meaning through unique educational opportunities and experiences.” While at CMU, Emma plans to study biochemistry and mathematics, with the goal of doing biomedical research in the field of epidemiology or etiology. “I would love to see myself working for the Centers for Disease Control or the World Health Organization,” she said. p Early College student takes a full ride to CMU Emma Doederlein found her passion at North Central, will transfer to CMU on a full scholarship ALUMNI SUCCESS STORY NORTH CENTRAL CARES Supporting our students in times of uncertainty.
